Senior Project Engineering Manager Substation

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a Senior Project Engineering Manager to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams delivering substation design and EPC work. The position oversees technical execution while supporting client relationships, proposals, and business development.

Project Details

The role supports substation and switchyard programs for investor-owned utilities, including design services and engineering, procurement, and construction projects. Related capabilities include renewables integration, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, data center integration, and battery energy storage systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams and coordinate work across multiple disciplines.
• Manage project deliverables, budgets, schedules, quality requirements, and work plans.
• Direct technical solutions, engineering calculations, equipment recommendations, and design reviews.
• Serve as the responsible engineering lead on complex projects and review lower-level engineering work.
• Communicate with clients, resolve project concerns, support pursuits, and manage changes under project manager oversight.
• Provide personnel management, including hiring, discipline, and pay administration for assigned staff.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• At least 11 years of related professional experience.
• Substation and switchyard experience spanning project lifecycle management, layout optimization, protection and control, civil and structural design, and major equipment.
• Experience with EPC or design-services projects for U.S. investor-owned utilities is preferred.
• Professional Engineer licensure is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of engineering standards, procurement, contract administration, proposals, and engineering estimates.
• Strong communication skills and willingness to engage with clients.

Compensation and Benefits

Published annual salary ranges are $148,852-$248,578 in Colorado and $155,618-$259,877 in California. The position is full-time, relocation eligible, and may offer hybrid or flexible work after the first 90 days. Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, disability and wellness programs, paid time off, a company-matched 401(k), and employee stock ownership through the ESOP. A performance-based bonus may also be available.
