Senior Electrical Engineer Substation (Part Time)

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a part-time Senior Electrical Engineer to serve as a technical specialist or project lead for high-voltage substation engineering work. The role supports complex design, coordination, quality, and client-facing activities within a hybrid or flexible work environment.

Project Details

The position supports substation engineering, procurement, and construction projects, including protection and control systems, physical substation design, renewables integration, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, data center integration, and battery energy storage integration.

Responsibilities

• Lead or coordinate substation design activities and multidisciplinary project teams.
• Develop protection and control deliverables, including relay, schematic, wiring, and single-line documentation.
• Prepare physical design packages covering layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control buildings, and auxiliary power systems.
• Review design packages for quality and compliance with engineering standards and codes.
• Prepare equipment specifications and bills of materials for procurement and construction.
• Manage technical scope, budgets, schedules, client coordination, and project risks.
• Mentor engineering staff and support proposals and business development.

Required Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• At least 11 years of related professional experience.
• High-voltage substation design experience in physical design and/or protection and controls.
• Experience with project leadership, technical reviews, quality assurance, client coordination, and consulting.
• Professional Engineer license preferred.
• Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Published annual compensation ranges vary by jurisdiction: $148,852-$248,578 in Colorado and Illinois; $142,086-$237,279 in Minnesota; $155,618-$237,640 in California; and $162,384-$271,176 in Massachusetts.
