Senior Electrical Engineer Substation

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership and advanced design expertise for complex utility substation projects in an employee-owned engineering, procurement, and construction environment.

Project Details

The role supports substation projects ranging up to 765kV, including protection and control, physical layout, grounding, lightning protection, control buildings, and auxiliary AC/DC systems. The team also works across renewable integration, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, battery storage, and data center infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead or coordinate substation engineering activities, design packages, budgets, schedules, and quality reviews.
• Develop protection and control, physical design, equipment specification, bill of materials, calculation, and engineering study deliverables.
• Coordinate with clients, vendors, subcontractors, project managers, and other engineering disciplines.
• Provide technical guidance, review work, mentor engineers, and support proposals and business development.
• Manage complex engineering solutions while maintaining applicable standards, codes, quality processes, and project requirements.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• At least 11 years of related experience.
• High-voltage substation design experience in physical design and/or protection and controls is preferred.
• Project lead or technical specialist experience with utility substation clients, QA/QC review experience, and consulting experience are preferred.
• Professional Engineer license and proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office are preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The Minnesota annual compensation range is $142,086-$237,279. The position is full-time and relocation eligible, with medical, dental, vision, disability, wellness, paid time off, 401(k) match, tuition reimbursement, employee stock ownership, and potential performance-based bonus eligibility. Hybrid or flexible work may be available after the first 90 days at management discretion.
