Lead Substation Commissioning Technician - Central Region

Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a lead substation commissioning technician for its Central Region team. This employee-owner role provides technical leadership during transmission substation commissioning and supports safe, compliant turnover to the client.

Project Details

The position supports high-voltage transmission substation projects, including protection systems, relay testing, energization checks, NERC CIP ESP/security zone commissioning, and post-commissioning documentation review.

Responsibilities

• Plan and maintain commissioning schedules, milestones, walkdowns, and system completion reviews.
• Lead commissioning activities independently from construction execution and help achieve timely project turnover.
• Provide functional direction to technicians, engineers, and craft personnel without direct people-management responsibility.
• Review commissioning plans, relay calibration results, test reports, checklists, and protection system documentation.
• Support troubleshooting, load checks, phasing verification, SWMS inventory, configuration validation, and technical feedback to testing resources.
• Follow applicable safety and quality requirements and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Experience

• OSHA 10-hour training is required.
• NICET or NETA certification is preferred.
• Eight or more years of relevant startup experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of commissioning procedures, contract documents, startup guidelines, power systems, and testing instruments is preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work at heights, climb ladders and scaffolds, and perform physically demanding outdoor work in a high-voltage substation environment.
