Substation Engineer Lead - Kiewit Power Delivery Engineering

Job Summary

Kiewit Power Delivery is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer in Houston to provide technical leadership for high-voltage substation, transmission, and distribution projects nationwide. The role combines hands-on design, engineering coordination, quality oversight, and mentorship in both traditional design and EPC environments.

Project Details

Projects range from 12 kV to 500 kV and include greenfield and brownfield substations supporting utility, renewable energy, industrial, and oil and gas markets. Work progresses from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction support, installation, testing, and commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Lead physical and protection and control design for high-voltage substations.
• Direct development of one-line and three-line diagrams, equipment layouts, specifications, bills of material, grounding studies, and cable, conductor, and raceway plans.
• Coordinate civil, structural, transmission, protection, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities.
• Review deliverables for technical accuracy, compliance, quality, and constructability.
• Support engineering schedules, staffing, risk mitigation, and resource planning.
• Provide technical guidance and mentor junior engineers and designers.

Required Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline.
• Eight to ten years of high-voltage substation design experience in a utility, EPC, or consulting environment.
• Experience leading engineering teams or serving as a technical lead.
• Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and utility-specific requirements.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, CDEGS, or comparable substation design tools.
• Strong communication, coordination, safety, and deadline-management skills.
