Substation Engineer - Kiewit Power Engineering

Job Summary

Kiewit Power Engineering is seeking an entry-level Substation Engineer to support electrical design and construction-related engineering for power delivery projects from its Lenexa, Kansas office.

Project Details

The team delivers detailed engineering and EPC services for substation, transmission, and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV, serving clients across the country. The broader power portfolio includes generation, renewables, environmental retrofits, and water/wastewater facilities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review electrical drawings, including one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, communications diagrams, wiring diagrams, and substation layouts.
• Develop equipment procurement, installation, and testing specifications.
• Use engineering software for grounding grid design, equipment sizing, relay coordination, and electrical studies.
• Coordinate design activities with project leadership, customers, and other stakeholders.
• Support safe, productive project execution and meet established deadlines, including overtime or weekend work when required.

Required Experience

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Zero to two years of related engineering experience; a 3.0 cumulative GPA is preferred.
• Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards.
• Eligibility to take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or obtain an Engineer-in-Training license.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, fluent English, dependable attendance, and authorization to work without employment sponsorship.
