Preconstruction Manager - Building

Job Summary

Kiewit is seeking a senior Preconstruction Manager to lead building estimates and design-phase services for major industrial, power, and heavy commercial projects from its Lenexa, Kansas office.

The Industrial & Water Engineering group supports EPC and design-build work involving datacenters, mineral processing, renewable fuels, pulp and paper, and industrial energy, water, and utility facilities. Flexible work opportunities are available.

Responsibilities

• Direct preconstruction activities from early design through handoff to construction, aligning scope, budget, schedule, and client objectives.
• Lead estimators and coordinate with project leaders, clients, architects, engineers, and trade partners.
• Prepare estimates, budgets, cost studies, schedules, bid packages, procurement plans, and division-of-work strategies.
• Review design documents, quantities, bids, and specifications to identify constructability issues, gaps, risks, and value-engineering opportunities.
• Manage trade partner outreach, bid leveling, prequalification, selection, scope development, and contract support.
• Present estimates, assumptions, budget updates, and risk assessments to leadership and clients.
• Maintain cost reporting and documentation while supporting early buyout, kickoff, mobilization, and transition to construction.
• Mentor estimating and project engineering personnel.

Required Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related discipline.
• At least 15 years of senior experience in estimating, preconstruction, project management, or trade partner management on industrial and heavy commercial work.
• Strong design coordination, budgeting, value engineering, quantity takeoff, cost analysis, and construction methods expertise.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, estimating software, Primavera P6, Bluebeam, and OST; willingness to learn InEight.
• Knowledge of building codes, design standards, materials, market pricing, and sustainable construction.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage multiple pursuits, negotiate, present proposals, and build client and trade relationships.
• CPE or PMP preferred; OSHA 30-Hour is a plus.
• Reliable attendance, professional communication, safe work practices, and availability for overtime or weekends when required.
